Hinemoa Elder

Hinemoa is a youth forensic psychiatrist living in New Zealand. She is of English descent and also Māori of Ngāti Kurī, Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri and Ngāpuhi iwi. Hinemoa is the current Māori strategic leader for the Centre of Research Excellence for the Ageing Brain.


Her PhD focused on the development of tikanga approaches for Māori tamariki (children) who experienced traumatic brain injury (TBI) inclusive of whānau and professionals that work with them. Hinemoa has maintained a private practice where she specialises in neuropsychiatric assessment and treatment for tamariki, taiohi and their whānau who have experienced TBI.


Hinemoa is a staunch advocate for the use of te reo Māori in all settings, including research and medical practice. In support of this, she has contributed a chapter in Maea te Toi Ora: Māori Health Transformations written in te reo Māori.
